before the project even started, the choice of a jane austen novel was an immediate and enthusiastic decision for me. i was eager to delve into the world of austen and her timeless characters and narratives. for ’emma,’ i envisioned a design that echoed the novel’s essence—simple, sweet, and evocative of a pastoral countryside setting. i aimed to capture the charm and wit of the story through the visual elements.
the illustration process involved careful consideration of the novel’s themes and tone. With ‘Emma,’ a story centered around love and self-discovery, i sought to convey a sense of intimacy and sincerity through the artwork, and a knowing look from emma. the quote “love knows best, and emma knows love” encapsulates the heart of the story and served as a guiding principle throughout the design process. it informed my decision to prioritize simplicity and sincerity in the illustrations, to capture the essence of ’emma,’ but also invites readers to immerse themselves in jane austen’s world of love, wit, and romance. i hope to eventually illustrate ‘persuasion’ and ‘pride and prejudice’ someday soon!
